About ESRA

ESRA unites leading experts from national laboratories, universities, and industry to create an innovation ecosystem that enables energy storage discovery and expedites technology commercialization for cutting-edge energy storage solutions.

Established in 2023, ESRA brings together world-class researchers from three national laboratories and 11 universities. The consortium is led by Argonne National Laboratory and co-led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

ESRA convenes proven global leaders in energy storage research and development with a staff of top-tier researchers and a unique suite of leading-edge scientific facilities for materials characterization, synthesis, computing, and experimental validation.

The combined expertise of ESRA spans the full innovation ecosystem—mission-driven basic research, innovative engineering, technology development, entrepreneurial know-how, and commercialization.

Mission

ESRA is an Energy Innovation Hub funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) focused on energy storage and next-generation battery discovery. ESRA aims to enable transformative discoveries in materials chemistry, gain a fundamental understanding of electrochemical phenomena at the atomic scale, lay the scientific foundations for breakthroughs in energy storage technologies, and train the next-generation battery workforce to ensure U.S. scientific and economic leadership.
